Netflix Ireland remind users of new price hike and when it kicks in

Streaming giant Netflix is preparing to hike prices for Irish customers.

The standard and premium plans will rise but the basic offering is still the same at €7.99 a month.

The cost of its standard plan - which lets users view content on two screens at the same time - is rising by €1 to €12.99.

Their premium subscription plan -which allows users’ stream TV shows and movies on four devices at the same time - is to increase by €2 to €17.99.

It is the third increase over the last three years with Netflix last hiking prices in June 2019.

Existing subscribers will be told by email and within the Netflix app a month before the new prices are applied to them.

Increases will apply to new joiners immediately.

Plans range from €7.99 to €17.99 a month.

The streaming service's subscriber numbers have jumped during the pandemic, with close to 16 million new customers added globally in the first three months of 2020 alone.

A spokeswoman for Netflix said: “Our price change reflects the significant investments we’ve made in new TV shows and films, as well as improvements to our product.

"Our basic membership will remain at the same price ensuring as many people as possible can enjoy our content."

The spokeswoman told the Irish Times that Ireland and the UK is Netflix’s second most important market for production globally, with $1 billion (€820 million) spent on content in 2020 alone.

A slew of titles – including Fate Winx Saga, My Father’s Dragon and Vikings Valhalla – have been shot in Ireland, with shooting locations in Wicklow and Kilkenny.

Netflix is available in more than 190 countries, and has almost 200 million subscribers.

During the pandemic, many gorged on some of its biggest shows – including The Last Dance, a documentary on the exploits of US basketball legend Michael Jordan

Netflx Ireland have been contacted for comment by the Irish Mirror.
