Netflix fans all ask the same question after 2023 film slate is released

Netflix fans have all asked the same question after the streaming giant announced its slate of upcoming films but failed to include one highly anticipated sequel. On Wednesday (January 18), Netflix’s official Twitter account shared a sizzle reel featuring the biggest Netflix original films due to release this year.

The two-and-a-half-minute montage includes clips from a host of blockbusters set to premiere on the platform throughout 2023. The standouts include Chris Hemsworth action sequel Extraction 2, Millie Bobby Brown fantasy flick Damsel, and Zack Snyder’s epic space opera Rebel Moon – which started life as a Star Wars film.

Also due to launch later this year are the BBC crime-drama continuation Luther: The Fallen Sun and David Fincher’s neo-noir thriller The Killer. However, there was one glaring omission from Netflix’s 2023 slate that left many fans confused and frustrated.

Upcoming superhero film The Old Guard 2 – the next instalment of the Charlize Theron action flick based on the graphic novels of the same name – was missing from Netflix’s post. The first Old Guard film was a hit with viewers when it dropped on the streaming platform in 2020, and fans have been patiently waiting for a sequel ever since.

It centred around a covert team of immortal mercenaries who were forced to fight to keep their identities secret after being exposed. Directed by American filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood, The Old Guard was well received by viewers, and currently boasts a Certified Fresh 80 percent rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Filming for The Old Guard 2 wrapped in September, with new cast members Uma Thurman and Henry Golding joining the returning KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts and Chiwetel Ejiofor. A release date for the sequel is yet to be confirmed, but it was expected to drop sometime this year.

Now it’s absence from Netflix’s movie montage has left fans frustrated and worried about its future, with many taking to social media to demand answers. On Twitter, @RememberMeNever said: “The Old Guard 2 finished filming in September 2022. Is there some reason it is not scheduled to be released in 2023?

“There is OBVIOUSLY a demand for it! The fandom has waited patiently for news, please give us SOMETHING.”

@ThorTwinkle said: “Not a SINGLE title that interests me. Where is The Old Guard 2?! I’m really thinking of unsubscribing...”

@highflyer211 asked: “Where is The Old Guard 2????? Don’t make us wait another year please.”

@Gamebird_MLB said: “I’m confused about The Old Guard 2. We don’t even have a title, yet filming wrapped months ago. No release date, trailer...?”

@Beex_1 added: “Rebel moon looks interesting but it’s SO FRUSTRATING BECAUSE WHERE THE HELL IS THE OLD GUARD 2!!!”

Netflix is yet to confirm if The Old Guard 2 has been pushed back until 2024.
