Nemanja Vidic pinpoints what Man City's John Stones has done to recapture England form

Nemanja Vidic has picked out the stand-out quality that has enabled John Stones to revive his England career and star at Euro 2020 this summer.

A key part of the Three Lions squad that reached the World Cup semi-finals in Russia three years ago, Stones went on to suffer a dip in his form at Manchester City — which in turn lost him his international place.

It's been a long road to redemption for the Barnsley-born defender.

However, as England prepare for their biggest game since that heart-breaking defeat to Croatia — against Denmark at Wembley tonight (8pm) — Stones is very much back at the peak of his powers.

With the 27-year-old and Ruben Dias at the heart of their defence, City coasted to a third Premier League trophy in four seasons, in addition to winning another Carabao Cup; although Pep Guardiola's side fell agonisingly short in their latest quest for that elusive Champions League triumph.

Alongside teammate Kyle Walker and Manchester United duo, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, Stones is now 90 minutes away from a shot of redemption, albeit on the international stage.

And it's not just those with City connections who have been impressed with the stylish centre-back, whose current deal the Etihad Stadium runs out next summer.

Indeed, his form has been noted by United legend Vidic, who told The Athletic: "John Stones is good on the ball and he's getting better.

"His best qualities are on the ball rather than defending. His passing is excellent. He understands his role and knows he can go forward if England play three at the back."
