Neil McCann rues the lost Rangers message as club hero left shocked by half time switch

Shocked Neil McCann admits he didn't see Rangers' under-par second half display against Motherwell coming.

The pundit was impressed by Steven Gerrard 's side as they led at the break through Fashion Sakala but flag day became a damp squib when Kaiyne Woolery scored to secure a shock point for the Steelmen.

McCann was effusive in his praise of his former team but admits their second rate efforts after the interval were a surprise considering the free flowing football on display during the opening 45 minutes.

McCann told Rangers TV : “The frustration the coaching team must have is that they were nowhere near it in the second half.

“It was a really disappointing end to a game that could have been so much better. They will find out Celtic have lost and it’s a big opportunity missed to extend the lead at the top of the table.

"If they had continued for the duration without the half time break Rangers would have gone on and won the game handsomely.

“But it gave Motherwell a chance to regroup, tinker some tactics and the bodies and minds to settle down because Rangers weren’t the same.

"There’s no question Fashion Sakala’s goal was offside and I’m sure Graham Alexander will point that out and say they should have actually won the game.

“But the Rangers message at half time would have been ‘more of the same’ we don’t change a thing, we apply ourselves the same way in the second half as we did in the first and we win the game.

“They were wasteful. Fashion had good opportunities. It was concerning, as good as they were in the first half, that they were giving away chances by being really open.

“The goal they conceded will enrage Steven Gerrard because it’s too easy. Jack Simpson had to get right in and shut the gap.

“They weren’t well structured and that has cost Rangers a really important three points.

“If you sat and looked at the first half, and even in the second half they created a couple of chances, they should have had three points tucked away."
