Neil Druckmann says Naughty Dog is finished with Uncharted

There will apparently be no new Uncharted games moving forward, as Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann says the team is moving on from the action game series. Druckmann made the comments in an interview with BuzzFeed, where he said the team doesn’t feel like a new Uncharted sequel is necessary.

“For us, Uncharted was insanely successful – Uncharted 4 was one of our best-selling games – and we’re able to put our final brushstroke on that story and say that we’re done,” Druckmann said. “We’re moving on.”

He said Naughty Dog is in a “very priveleged” position with Sony, where PlayStation doesn’t demand sequels for the sake of profit or keeping a franchise alive. Instead, the team is allowed to do what they want.

That same logic means that The Last of Us Part 3 isn’t set in stone either, despite Druckmann teasing the game practically since The Last of Us 2 released. Druckmann said he’s only open to the idea on one condition: “if [the team] can come up with a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love.”

“With The Last of Us, it’s up to us whether we want to continue it or not,” Druckmann said. “If we can’t come up with something, we have a very strong ending with Part 2 and that will be the end.”

Except it’s not entirely the end, as Naughty Dog is also working on a standalone The Last of Us multiplayer game that reportedly has a strong story component.

Druckmann didn’t say whether other studios under the PlayStation umbrella could pick up the Uncharted series with different characters, as Legacy of Thieves does, for future releases. Whatever the case, Sony may be planning more Uncharted movies, as it called the first one the start of a “successful franchise” after its box office success.
