Neha Dhupia: I hate the word sexy and did everything to change it

Neha Dhupia feels that actors often make the mistake of worrying too much about roles and paychecks before taking up films. The actor, who stars alongside Vidya Balan in Tumhari Sulu, says that one should focus on the job at hand, instead of worrying about the territory of work.

“I tell everyone to first grab the job and then worry about other things. Don’t become a star before the job is given to you. A lot of people make that mistake in our business,” says Neha.

Sharing her own experiences around it all, Neha says, “I meet people who say no to a film either because they feel the money is not enough, or because they are not getting the right kind of roles. I tell them that anything they do, they should make it [into] the right kind of role.”

A former beauty queen, Neha started her career with glamorous roles in films such as Qayamat: City Under Threat (2003), Julie (2004), and Sheesha (2005). Eventually, she moved on to movies in the indie space, including Delhii Heights (2007), Mithya, Dasvidaniya (both 2008), Phas Gaye Re Obama (2010) and Moh Maya Money (2016).

I meet people who say no to a film because they feel they are not getting the right kind of roles. I tell them that anything they do, they should make it into the right kind of role.

On whether it has been a conscious decision to move to more content-driven cinema after her initial films, the 37-year-old says, “For me, it was never ta part of a plan. I hate the word sexy [referring to the tag she gained in the initial stage in her career]. I did everything to change that as I don’t believe in it. I did a lot of films with Saurabh Shukla, Rajat Kapoor and those were great.”

Neha says she’s okay doing a minor role in a film that she believes in, as opposed to a feature film that lacks quality content. “I played a small role in Hindi Medium. I will be seen in the Vidya Balan-starrer Tumhari Sulu and then Irrfan’s Qarib Qarib Singlle. I enjoy those [films],” she says.

Besides starring in films, Neha has also got into TV and audio show production. However, the actor is in no hurry to get into film production. “I am not thinking about films right. I don’t have the bandwidth or man power. I may do another TV show,” she concludes.
