NCT buses tracking system affected by 'serious' water damage

Nottingham City Transport's real-time tracking system has been hit by "serious" water damage.

The company's engineers were conducting maintenance work on Monday, October 28, on a transmitter in Mapperley, when they happened upon a further problem they were unaware of.

The transmitter is part of the tracking system which communicates the locations of bus drivers across the city and beyond, which then helps predictions to be made for when buses are due to arrive at a stop.

Engineers discovered "serious water ingress" in the cabling that connects the antenna at the top of the tower to the base station at the bottom.

This means all cabling will now have to be replaced.

A spokesman for NCT said: "This cabling must now be replaced and we are liaising with the specialist rigging team and system suppliers to book the installation.

"Until the new cabling is installed, our facility to track buses and communicate with drivers is intermittent.

"We are sorry for the inconvenience caused and are pushing for the new cable to be installed as soon as possible.

"In the meantime, we will provide service updates on our website and social media, as best we can, but we may not be able to advise where a specific bus is."

The bus company said predictions on bus stops, the website and the app may be shown in 'scheduled mode', which is a set time, rather than a minute countdown.

It says the scheduled time is shown in black text.

Predictions on bus stops and other devices may also lack accuracy as the time will be based on when the bus was last tracked, meaning the signal may have dropped since then.

NCT's control room will also have limited information about issues affecting the network, such as traffic updates, breakdowns and severe congestion.
