The National Council for Peace and Order has warned Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit and his group not to hold a planned press conference this morning, saying such an activity could break the regime's order.

So-called young blood Thanathorn announced Wednesday he will apply to the Election Commission to register a new political party Thursday to contest the election expected to be held in February next year.

The 39-year-old executive vice-president of the Thai Summit Group posted on his Facebook page an invitation to people in the medical profession to have a coffee with him and his "Friends of Thanathorn" group. After that, he and his group would go to EC headquarters to apply to register the party.

NCPO spokesman Col Winthai Suvaree said Mr Thanathorn's planned meeting with journalists could violate the NCPO ban on political gatherings. Officials who monitor the meeting will decide whether the activity breaks the regulation.

Mr Thanathorn on Wednesday resigned as a director of Matichon Plc, the operator of Matichon newspaper to safeguard its independence.

"I have chosen my new way, a decision that will change my life forever. My resignation is to protect the dignity of the Matichon," he said.
