National Treasure series from Jerry Bruckheimer coming to Disney+

A new TV series based on National Treasure is in the works at Disney+.

Fifteen years after the first film starring Nicolas Cage was released, producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Colliderthat development on a TV adaptation is taking place, along with the previously announced third National Treasure film.

“We’re certainly working on one for streaming and we’re working on one for the big screen,” he said.

“Hopefully they’ll both come together and we’ll bring you another National Treasure, but they’re both very active. The one for Disney+ is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept but a young cast. The one for theatrical would be the same cast.”

Despite the third film having been in the works for years, Bruckheimer confirmed that the TV show was likely to be released first, explaining: “The film version is being written right now. The television version is in process. We have a pilot script done and an outline of the future episodes.”

The first National Treasure film grossed more than $347m (£280m) when it was released in 2004 and was a massive success for Disney, who produced the franchise.

The 2007 follow up, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, was even bigger, grossing $460m (£371m).

The original film followed Cage’s character Benjamin Franklin Gates, a historian who uses a map on the back of the Declaration of Independence to hunt for missing treasure. The film also starred Harvey Keitel, Diane Kruger, Sean Bean and Jon Voight.
