Nathan Wood hits back at Neil Warnock claims as Hibs loan was called into question by Middlesbrough boss

Nathan Wood has opened up on the war of words between Neil Warnock and the Hibs loanee's agent.

The Middlesbrough boss was irked by the 19-year-old going out on loan to Easter Road in the summer after a defensive crisis recently hit his squad at Boro.

Experienced gaffer Warnock called Wood's move north into question - blaming his agent for brokering the deal that saw the youngster move from the Championship to the Scottish Premiership.

However, England U/20 skipper Wood says he "needed to get out of Middlesbrough" to play games and is happy to be doing that under Jack Ross.

Speaking to the Scotsman, the centre-back is delighted to be getting minutes after making his long-awaited Hibees debut in the 3-0 thrashing by Dundee United last weekend as he discussed working for Warnock.

He said: “Everyone has their opinions on [Warnock] but he’s fine with me. I just needed to get out of Middlesbrough, to be honest, as I didn’t really feel part of that squad and didn’t feel I was playing enough games at my age.

“That’s why I took it on myself to push for a loan. It was my decision. I could have gone to League One or stayed at Boro, but I didn’t want to just be comfortable.

“I wanted to push to play games in an environment like this where it’s hard to get into the team and you need to work hard to stay there.

“Waiting for your chance can be part of football sometimes. I have had to wait to get into the team but I didn't come here thinking it was going to be a breeze and that I was going to come in and get in the team easily because this is a good team that has been winning games. So, if the time is not right, you’ve just got to wait for your chance to come.

“And, when it comes to the things [Warnock] said about whether this loan is right for me, whether it ends up being good or bad is up to me. It is up to me to make it a good loan. But I can only do that by training well week in, week out, and playing well.”
