Nat Phillips running out of time as Liverpool reach 'fair' £15m transfer decision

Only two Premier League games have been played since Liverpool and Burnley last clashed swords.

But for Nat Phillips, it may well feel like many, many more.

Back in May, Jurgen Klopp's side visited Turf Moor seeking the win that would allow them to take control of their top-four destiny going into the final weekend of an at times harrowing campaign.

For Phillips, it was arguably the high point of a breakthrough season, heading home his first goal for the club and later nodding a Burnley effort off his own line to ensure a clean sheet and ease Liverpool to a 3-0 triumph.

A few days later and the centre-back was helping the Reds finish the job with a home win over Crystal Palace that earned third place and Champions League qualification.

However, when Burnley visit Anfield this afternoon, any Phillips involvement in the matchday squad is likely reliant on the late absence of one of his defensive colleagues.

The return to fitness of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, along with the £36million capture of Ibrahima Konate, has pushed Phillips back down the centre-back pecking order.

Indeed, it's less than 11 months since the 24-year-old had his bags packed before his move to Championship side Swansea City failed to materialise.

Now, though, with 10 days until the transfer window closes, the clock may be ticking down on the Anfield career of Phillips one final time.

Burnley, along with Brighton, West Ham United and Newcastle United, were strongly linked with an interest in the defender earlier in the summer.

Those rumours have since gone somewhat cold, with Southampton now keeping tabs although any interest is yet to be made concrete.

For his part, Phillips has proven himself more than capable as a Premier League league defender, his no-nonsense style making him something of a cult hero among supporters forced to watch from home for almost all of the previous campaign.

And there's no doubt that, mindful of the injury crisis that handed Phillips his unexpected opportunity last season, Klopp would like to keep the player as a centre-back option.

The Reds boss, though, has always been fair with his players, and will have made it clear to Phillips his chances of regular first-team football.

Liverpool are in no real rush to sell and believe £15m is a fair price, but the call may ultimately be that of the player.

Phillips may well end up something of a curio, someone who made 17 league appearances for Liverpool but never once featured in front of anything close to a capacity crowd in the Premier League.

But if Phillips rolls up his sleeves and opts to stay put, Klopp has long discovered he has another defender in which he can trust.
