Nat Phillips makes Liverpool future claim after return of Virgil van Dijk

Nat Phillips claims he is viewing the return of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez from injury as an 'opportunity'.

The centre-back has been linked with a move away from Liverpool despite becoming a fan-favourite last season as he helped the club into the Champions League places.

Phillips saw himself line-up with different defensive partners as he ended the campaign alongside Rhys Williams and loan star Ozan Kabak.

With question marks around his future following the arrival of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig, he is seeing the return of the Liverpool trio as an opportunity to 'take on new things'.

"That's nothing new in football, you've always got high competition for places," he told Liverpoolfc.com.

"Obviously with those boys coming back and seeing them play again, it is nice to have them back in front of you and be able to try to pick things up again, like I always used to and try to learn from their games when you see them in training.

"You've got to view it as an opportunity. They are three of the best defenders in the world – you'd be daft if you didn't take that opportunity to try to take on new things yourself and try to learn things from their game.

"I've always been the same in that I don't like to overthink or buy into it too much – the positives and negatives – because you don't want to get carried away with yourself and start getting complacent or, I don't know, believe the hype too much."

Phillips missed the opening two mini-friendlies against FC Wacker Innsbruck and former club VfB Stuttgart after Jurgen Klopp opted to field Joel Matip, Ben Davies, Ibrahima Konate and Rhys Williams for the two 30-minute matches.

He featured for 44 minutes against FSV Mainz 05 in their 1-0 win thanks to an own goal from Luca Kilian.
