Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr. is a man of his word. The NASCAR driver made an internet wager with a potential tattoo on the line, and when his fans came through, he held up his end of the deal.
Last month, the No. 43 Chevrolet driver shared a couple photos on Twitter of team owner and racing legend Richard Petty surprising him with an autograph on his arm. Wallace said if the photos received 43,000 retweets, he’d get a tattoo of The King’s signature.
About 37 hours later, Wallace’s tweet hit the 43,000 mark, with the help of some of the most popular Twitter accounts in NASCAR, including Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the governing body’s official account.
And Monday, Wallace got what appears to be his first tattoo — although it was on the back of his leg and not his arm where Petty initially left his autograph.
How did Wallace decide to go with a tattoo on the back of his leg rather than his arm? Via Sporting News, which was there to document the process:
His PR person reminded him that “tattoos are forever.” Which is part of the reason Wallace chose to get the tattoo on the back of his thigh rather than his arm. For multiple reasons, he doesn’t want any tattoo he gets to be easily visable [sic]. “That’s not my thing,” Wallace allowed.
Luckily, there were plenty of cameras there to document the process. And hopefully it heals enough by Saturday, the next time Wallace will have to race for several hours at Bristol Motor Speedway.
And then, according to Wallace’s Instagram story, he got another tattoo. Saying he was “back for more,” this one is on his left shoulder/upper arm area.
