NASA shares top tips to see Comet Neowise from Scotland this week

Comet Neowise is going to be visible to the naked eye from in the Scotland for the rest of July.

The comet was first spotted in late March by a space telescope and will reach its closest point to Earth on Thursday, July 23.

Formally named C/2020 F3, the comet will be visible to observers across the Northern Hemisphere this month as it zips through the inner solar system.

It's been putting on a stunning display for eagle-eyed skywatchers before it disappears, not to be seen again for 6,800 years.

If you'd like to see the once-in-a-lifetime comet, thankfully, NASA  has your back, and has revealed its top tip to see Comet NEOWISE this week.

How to see Comet NEOWISE

  1.  Find a spot away from city lights with an unobstructed view of the sky
  2. Just after sunset, look below the Big Dipper in the northwest sky
  3. If you have them, bring binoculars or a small telescope to get the best views of this dazzling display

You will need to get up early – in mid-July Neowise is most visible around 80 minutes before sunrise, so shortly after 3.30am.

The comet will reach peak brightness on the evening of July 23, but will be visible all week, so make sure you keep an eye to the skies.

You do not need binoculars to see the comet, though they will enhance the view.
