Napoli president drops major Luis Enrique hint amid next Tottenham manager links

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has hinted that Luis Enrique "prefers the Premier League" amid talk of him replacing Luciano Spalletti in the Italian side's hotseat this summer. Despite leading Napoli to only their third ever Scudetto, Spalletti has confirmed that he will depart at the end of the season and take some time out of the game.

As well as all the speculation linking Enrique with a switch to Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, the 53-year-old has also been mentioned in regards to the current vacancy at Tottenham following Antonio Conte's departure. Having seen Mauricio Pochettino head to Chelsea and Arne Slot pen a new contract with Feyenoord, Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou is the current favourite with the bookies to succeed Conte.

Adored by former Tottenham managing director of football Fabio Paratici, Enrique still remains high on the list with the bookmakers despite the ex-Juventus chief's exit at the end of April. Asked about the possibility of the former Barcelona player becoming Napoli's next manager, De Laurentiis issued an update and suggested that a Premier League move may be Enrique's ideal destination.

“He is a great coach, he did really well at Barcelona but I think he prefers the Premier League,” he told Rai, as reported by Football Italia.

He added: “We must remember that we are dealing with leagues that are more appealing than ours, like the English one. There are better offers there. I would tell him that he’d find better food here and there is no gulf over there.

“We are assessing several coaches using a 4-3-3 system with our extraordinary players who we want to keep.”

Former Spurs boss Conte has been linked with the Napoli job, although De Laurentiis' desire to continue with a coach who plays 4-3-3 hints that the 53-year-old will not be taking on the job in Naples. Conte operated with a 3-4-3 system at Tottenham and very rarely strayed away from it.

Tottenham fans will be hoping that Daniel Levy can make a swift decision over Conte's replacement with the 2022/23 Premier League season now complete. As things stand, the Lilywhites will surpass the 72 days it took to name Nuno Espirito Santo in the hotseat two years ago unless a replacement is found in the coming days.
