Naga Munchetty haunted by first experience of racism when she was just seven years old

Naga Munchetty 's first experience of racism was at just seven years old.

She has carved out her high-flying career in the spotlight as a BBC newsreader on BBC Breakfast and Newsnight.

But racism has haunted her all these years later as she uttered the words: "You never forget the first time."

Naga, 46, spent her childhood in South London with her parents, her mum from India and her dad from Mauritius.

Looking back, the TV star relived the "overwhelming shame" she felt at the time when she first experienced racism.

Her Panorama episode: Let’s Talk About Race explored what race and racism mean in the UK today.

"You never forget the first time," she said.

"I was seven when someone I thought was my friend at school said we could no longer hang out because I was a P-word...

"The sense of shame was overwhelming. I was told I didn’t belong when, up until then, I assumed I did. From that moment on, I knew I was seen as different."
