VADODARA: The police on Sunday arrested Rameez Sheikh who has been accused of ditching Nafisa Khokhar and abetting her to commit suicide in Tandalja on June 20.
Sheikh has been booked for abetment to suicide by the J P Road police station based on a complaint filed by the deceased’s sister Sultana. The 25-year-old woman was found hanging at her residence in Tandalja area on June 20.
“Sheikh has been arrested. We are investigating if any other person is involved in the incident. He claims that he works for a big private firm in Surat,” said inspector R N Patel of J P Road police station.
After Khokhar’s suicide, a video went viral which she had shot at the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad before taking the drastic step. In the videos, Nafisa had claimed to have been cheated in love by Sheikh. The videos narrate how the deceased had been roaming around in the city for days together in search of her lover.
Amid tears, she had also said that the accused had stopped taking her calls. In yet another video, Nafisa had declared her decision to end her life.
In the complaint, Sultana mentions how the 26-year-old Sheikh treated her sister badly and even did not heed to her requests.
Khokhar had attempted suicide a few months ago too by consuming poison after Sheikh had allegedly refused to marry her. The cops said that they are verifying all the claims and are questioning Sheikh about their relationship.
Earlier, the police had registered the incident as an unnatural death even as the family members kept alleging that Nafisa had ended her life after she was betrayed in love by the Ahmedabad-based Sheikh.
The police started investigation then though it did not register any offence against him till Thursday evening and were waiting for the post mortem report. Investigating officer police sub-inspector K U Chaudhary said that Nafisa’s mobile phone, on which the videos were recorded, had been sent to the forensic sciences laboratory for scientific investigation.
