Mystery 'vile' smell in borough that's making people 'feel sick'

A pungent smell drifting across homes in Bootle has caused concern among residents.

The odour, reported yesterday evening, was described as "a nauseous burning rubber or gas smell."

One suggestion was that it emanated from the palm oil refinery on the docks.

Several people took to a community Facebook page to comment on the bad smell.

One said: "It's been on and off for days, it's vile. Apparently it is coming from the docks."

Another resident said: "The smell has been with us for a couple of weeks. I can even smell it at 5.30 in the morning on my way to work and it does smell a bit like gas."

One local commented to say: "It's awful, makes me feel ill. Had to go down at 3am other morn and turn my gas off at its mains.

"I've had to shut my widow yet again through it tonight. Makes me wonder is this the reason I suffer with headaches."
