Mystery as Nottingham city centre post box changes from traditional red to blue

Mystery surrounds a post box in Nottingham city centre that has changed colours from its traditional red to bright blue.

The postbox in Angel Row, outside the Bell Inn, has wet paint signs around it - but the reasons for the change are unclear.

Royal Mail refused to comment on the colour change when contacted by Nottinghamshire Live about it.

There are believed to be at least two other blue post boxes in the country, in Manchester and Windsor.

What are Greenfly and why do they appear when the weather gets warmer

These were apparently painted blue to commemorate the former Air Mail post boxes of the 1930s, which specifically dealt with Air Mail to Europe.

But it's not known if the Nottingham post box has been painted for the same reason.

Speculation is mounting as to whether the blue postboxes are linked to the Cricket World Cup taking place this summer.

Blue postboxes have been spotted in Nottingham, Chester-le Street, in Durham and Taunton in Somerset, which are all World Cup venues.

A spokesman for Trent Bridge told Nottinghamshire Live they were unaware as to why the post box was painted blue.

On Monday, May 20, Royal Mail announced a roll out of 1,400 'parcel postboxes' across the UK, following a successful trial in 2018.

However, the post box that has changed colour is a traditional one for letters.
