Macron suggested holding a G7 meeting in Paris on Thursday afternoon. This would happen right after world leaders finish their annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. Trump is already planning to attend the Davos gathering.
Macron’s proposal reveals deep concerns over Greenland and global tensions
The guest list for the Paris meeting is unusual and controversial. Macron wrote in his message, “I can organise a G7 meeting in Paris on Thursday afternoon after Davos.” He added, “I can invite the Ukrainians, the Danes, the Syrians and the Russians on the sidelines” of the meeting. This plan would bring together countries involved in major conflicts and disagreements.
The push for this urgent meeting comes from Europe’s worry about Trump’s tariff threats. Trump warned he would put tariffs on eight European countries as part of a pressure campaign focused on Greenland. Critics have pointed out how Trump’s policies clash with facts when it comes to international relations. Macron tried to balance praise and criticism in his text, writing: “My friend, we are completely aligned on Syria. We can do great things in Iran. I don’t understand what you are doing in Greenland.”

The Greenland dispute is just one problem in the increasingly difficult relationship between Trump and Macron. Even Russia has dismissed Trump’s Greenland claims by confirming the territory belongs to Denmark. Things got worse this week when Trump threatened a 200 percent tariff on French wine. This came after France said it would not join Trump’s proposed “Board of Peace.” A source close to Macron said, “Tariff threats to influence our foreign policy are unacceptable and ineffective.”
The timing of the Paris meeting shows scheduling problems around the Davos forum. Trump will arrive in Switzerland on Wednesday, but Macron is only scheduled to be there until Tuesday evening.
