NEW DELHI: In a display of communal harmony, members of the Muslim community turned up to welcome kanwariyas in the Bara Hindu Rao area on Wednesday and showered flower petals on them.
When the kanwariyas, who were bringing holy water from Haridwar, returned to Delhi, they were warmly welcomed in the area, said police.
Deputy commissioner of police (north) Sagar Singh Kalsi said they were welcomed with garlands by the Muslim community and flowers were showered on them. "Flowers were also showered from the windows of the Muslim residents' houses. While welcoming them, drums were played and members from different communities danced together," the officer said. He further added that snacks, fruits, cold drinks, sharbat and water were also distributed to the kanwariyas.
A programme was later organised by the Sanatan Dharm Mandir community to honour the kanwariyas. Delhi Police has, meanwhile, heightened security across Delhi to ensure that no untoward incident takes place in the month of saavan.
