The xx won it last year. Elbow won it in 2008. But in-between Speech Debelle picked up the Mercury prize, and what's happened to her?
This week Alexis Petridis is joined by Rebecca Nicholson and Ruth Barnes. They look at the odds and try to predict what's going on in the heads of Mercury prize judges by guessing what will be on Tuesday's nominee shortlist. The team have warm words for SBTRKT, Anna Calvi and Katy B as well as James Blake and Ghostpoet. Ruth also has hopes for some of the more unexpected acts such as Madam and Alice Gun.
The team also listen to new tracks from Beyoncé, the Advisory Circle and Joanna Newsom.
