Music Artists Call For Protection Against AI Infringement

An AI (Artificial Intelligence) sign is seen at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai

The Artists Rights Alliance, supported by a coalition of approximately 200 music artists such as Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, and Camila Cabello, has issued an open letter urging digital music developers to refrain from using artificial intelligence (AI) in ways that infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists. The initiative highlights concerns about AI developers utilizing musical works without authorization to create AI-generated imitations or using AI-generated sounds to diminish royalty obligations.

The intervention by the Artists Rights Alliance underscores the growing threat posed by AI to creators and its increasing significance in both legal and pop music realms. Executive director Jen Jacobsen emphasized the challenges faced by working musicians in the streaming landscape, stating that the unethical use of generative AI to supplant human artists could devalue the entire music ecosystem for artists and fans alike.

The open letter, signed by prominent figures in the music industry such as Sam Smith, HYBE, Jon Bon Jovi, Norah Jones, Pearl Jam, R.E.M., Chuck D, and Kate Hudson, acknowledges the potential of AI to enhance human creativity when used responsibly. However, it condemns platforms and developers who exploit AI to undermine artists, songwriters, musicians, and rightsholders.

In a legal development, three major music publishers—Universal Music Publishing Group, Concord Music Group, and ABKCO—filed a lawsuit against Anthropic, an AI company accused of infringing on copyrighted song lyrics by training AI models using internet-sourced information. The lawsuit reflects the industry's efforts to combat the unauthorized use of AI to replicate professional artists' voices and violate creators' rights.

The artists' campaign aligns with ongoing discussions among U.S. policymakers and regulators regarding the implementation of safeguards to ensure ethical AI use in music while fairly compensating artists. The Artists Rights Alliance has made the full list of supporting artists and their open letter accessible on its website, urging digital music platforms and services to commit to refraining from developing or deploying AI technology that undermines human artistry or deprives artists of fair compensation.
