Police have launched a murder investigation into the death of a 56-year-old woman who was found in her car with a fatal stab wound in the village of Pangbourne in Berkshire.

Officers were called at about 5.45pm on Thursday to a road traffic collision involving a Lexus vehicle on the A340. The woman received medical attention but died at the scene.

Around half an hour later, at about 6.15pm, Thames Valley police and British Transport Police officers were called to a railway track near Pangbourne. An 18-year-old man died at the scene. The two deaths were being treated as linked, the Thames Valley force said.

The head of its major crime unit, Det Supt Kevin Brown, called the investigation “complex” and said no one else was being looked for in connection with either death.

Neither of the deceased has been named but the next of kin for both have been informed.

“We are in the very early stages of this complex investigation, but we are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with either death,” said Brown.

“We are still investigating but are treating the two deaths as linked; we are keeping an open mind as to the circumstances of each. There is no wider threat to the public from these sad and tragic incidents.

“We would ask anyone with information about the deaths to please call 101 or make a report on our website, quoting reference number 43240005369.”

After initial “significant” disturbance to the roads and railway network at both scenes, normal transport arrangements had resumed, Brown said.

He said there would be an increased police presence while they continued to investigate and advised anyone with any concerns to speak to a uniformed officer.
