Police have begun a murder investigation after a woman was stabbed to death in Chelsea, south-west London, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Officers were called at 1.20am to a property in Stadium Street close to the river Thames, where a woman was said to be suffering from stab wounds.

The London ambulance service also went to the scene but the woman was pronounced dead at 1.45am.

Police say they believe they know the identity of the woman but are awaiting formal identification. They are attempting to trace the next of kin. A postmortem examination is yet to be carried out.

A Metropolitan police spokesman said: “A 48-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody at a central London police station.”
