A 31-year-old man was today arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a woman was found at an address in St Helens.

Emergency services were called to a house on Birch Grove in Garswood, a village in the borough, just before 2.15am, and found the female victim, 33, already dead.

She has been formally identified and her next of kin informed.

Detectives arrested the man, from nearby Ashton-in-Makerfield, who was taken to a police station on Merseyside to be quizzed by officers.

Currently, the tragedy is being treated as "unexplained."
