A man who allegedly murdered a 68-year-old in his home in Melbourne's west has been remanded in custody.

Scott Brian O'Brien, 43, faced Melbourne Magistrates Court via video link on Thursday after he was charged with the murder of Stephen O'Brien.

It's alleged he killed the 68-year-old at a property on Clapham Crescent in Wyndham Vale between January 7 and January 8.

Officers found the man's body on Tuesday while undertaking a welfare check.

During Thursday's hearing, the prosecutor said it would take three months to compile a brief of evidence, including CCTV and body-worn camera footage.

It was O'Brien's first time in custody but he had no health concerns that needed to be raised with the court, his lawyer Stephanie Mawby said.

O'Brien kept his head down during the brief hearing, only looking up when the magistrate said he would be remanded in custody.

He will return to court in May for a committal mention hearing.
