A NEW mural depicting Clydebank footballer John McGinn has appeared on a wall in his hometown.

The vibrant mural has popped up on Taylor Street, close to where the Scotland midfielder grew up, ahead of the World Cup.

It captures McGinn performing his iconic "goggles" celebration, created for his nephew Jack, who has poor eyesight.

His signature number seven is proudly displayed beside his picture with the words “Made in Clydebank. From Girders,” which references an Irn Bru slogan used in the 1980s.

It’s understood the mural is part of a new campaign soon to be launched by the soft drink company, and that two additional murals will appear elsewhere.

McGinn was born and raised in Clydebank, attending St Columba’s High School and St Peter the Apostle High School before playing for St Mirren and Hibernian. He recently helped English Premier League side Aston Villa win the Europa League final.

Clydebank locals have been reacting to the new artwork, including Michelle Clark. The 45-year-old, who lives on Taylor Street, said: “It’s interesting. It’s obviously a big statement piece. It’s nice to see things that are happening from a local perspective, people that have been born and bred here. Would I put it on my house? No, but I understand why the people that live there have chosen to do it and chosen to support it.”

Alana McKenna, 27, who also lives on Taylor Street, said: “I walked past it with my dog – it’s brilliant. It’ll bring a lot of traction to the street and a lot of people will want to visit it. It’s a great thing to have on the end of our street.”

Lauren Hunter, 37, who lives near Taylor Street, said: “I love it. I always pass through the street, and I noticed that it was getting done. It looks amazing. I love all that stuff.”

Paula Elsby (Image: Paula Elsby)

Paula Elsby, 45, from Yoker, said: “It’s very orange, but it’s a tribute to somebody, which is always good.”

Lauren Kane (Image: Lauren Kane)

Lauren Kane, 27, from Yoker, said: “I absolutely love it. I love seeing things like that. You see some in the city centre as well, and they’re always lovely, especially as it’s somebody who is from this area and has achieved so much. It’s good to see in our community.”
