Mumbai gets new admin hub as Air India building goes to state for Rs 1,601 crore

Mumbai: The transfer of the Air India building to the Maharashtra government marks an important milestone in strengthening the state's administrative infrastructure, PWD Minister Shivendrasinhraje Bhosale said on Wednesday after inspecting the iconic property at Nariman Point.

The government formally took possession of the building a day earlier after acquiring it from Air India Assets Holding Limited (AIAHL) for Rs 1,601 crore, around two-and-a-half years after the state cabinet approved the purchase in September 2023.

The building is expected to provide modern office space for various government departments and improve administrative efficiency.

Bhosale said the building would be developed into a model government complex with a focus on quality repairs, long-term durability and public convenience.

The minister directed officials to undertake a detailed structural audit of the building and complete all necessary repairs before shifting government offices to the premises, according to an official release.

The minister stressed that renovation work should be carried out with a focus on long-term durability without compromising quality. He also directed officials to use high-grade materials for electrical systems, fittings and other technical facilities.

Bhosale said the building's main entrance should be redesigned to reflect Maharashtra's stature and suggested seeking guidance from leading architects and expert institutions.

He emphasised that the safety and convenience of citizens visiting Mumbai from different parts of the state for official work should remain a top priority and instructed officials to complete the project within the stipulated timeframe.
