Mumbai: Building residents evacuated as retaining wall crashes

MUMBAI: Residents of a 16-storey building at Ghatkopar had to be evacuated after the retaining wall of their highrise crashed during excavation of adjoining structure.

Officials from N ward said the incident occurred while undertaking pIn a similar incident, a landslide near an under-construction building at Pedder Road in June this year resulted in a cracked footpath close to a hillock, a few buildings away from Prabhu Kunj, where the late singer Lata Mangeshkar lived.

As the incident took place late at night and there was no one on the footpath, no casualties were reported. Officials later said that the landslide took place when excavation for the basement of the building was underway.

Assistant municipal commissioner (N ward) Sanjay Sonawane said an FIR was being filed. "Piling was underway when the incident happened. The residents of the building had to be moved out for their own safety," said Sonwane.

Local MLA Parag Shah said fortunately no one was injured in the incident. "However, the civic authorities will issue a stop work notice till the structure is stabilized," said Shah.
