Mum warns parents to check sippy cups after her daughter 'drank mould for months'

A TikTok mum is warning parents to take more care cleaning their child’s training cup, after discovering disgusting mould lurking beneath the surface.

The horrified mum didn't think training cups could be pulled apart for a proper wash, but when she eventually did figure it out, @danit___ could not believe what she was seeing and was alarmed. "My baby has been drinking mold [sic] for months," she said, "all day daily!!"

It's not an obvious cleaning regime, but it is one @danit___ on TikTok wants to share with other parents. "This is not an, 'I’m mad about it' post, just an awareness spread for others that use them and don’t know either," she said.

She captions her video: "Make sure your kids' school is properly cleaning their 360 cups," she says in a clip that has had more than 2.5 million views.

It is a bit of a nauseating moment when she reveals the mould lurking in her daughter’s cup. She was oblivious and wants other parents to know. "GROSS!," says the onscreen text. "This probably explains her constant stubborn cough!"

In her video, the mum takes apart the brightly-coloured training cup. It looks perfectly usable, until she reveals the inside of the cup, which is covered in a disgusting, slimy mould, a build-up of old milk and food over several months.

She is not angry with her daughter’s nursery, however, as she says: "I think it was just an honest oversight. Not everybody knows these type cups can be broken down. I’m not upset. This is just an awareness spread.”

There were many comments who thanked her; it was not something they even knew about and would now make it part of their regime.

"Thank you for spreading awareness about how these come apart!!" said one comment.

While another said: "I’m glad you posted this. I have these my daughter hasn’t started using them yet but I didn’t know they came apart like this! Thank you!"

"To be fair if it weren’t for TikTok I would’ve never known those tops separated, it’s definitely possible the staff doesn’t either," someone else wrote.

"Thank you for sharing this! I work at a day-care and I didn't even know you had to clean it like that! tomorrow I'm checking all the cups!"
