Mum sends daughter 'savage' text message after dropping her dog off at shelter

When you're living in somebody else's house, you're living under their rules. A young woman has been left heartbroken after her mum sent her dog away to a rehoming shelter without bothering to give her a heads up. She came home to discover the house empty and sent her mum a text message asking whether her dog, named Chase, was at the groomers.

She couldn't believe her mum's savage response and has taken to Reddit to share the messages she received and seek reassurance about the situation. After asking where her dog is, her mum bluntly replied: "I took him to the shelter" before going on to explain how she doesn't actually like dogs so "getting him was a bad idea".

In response, the young woman said: "We only had him for a month though and you seemed to be loving him. Why didn't you tell me you got rid of him. I could have spent my last day enjoying being with him."

Adding salt into the wound, her mum simply replied: "Oh well."

While most users shared their shock over the mum's "heartless" actions, others urged the young woman to cut her out of her life before it's too late.

One user said: "This kind of emotional abuse and manipulation is why I don't speak to either of my parents anymore."

Another user added: "I don't want to insult your mum but the 'oh well' was cold."

A third user said: "My mum was an 'oh well' mum when you called her out on treating you like poo. Now I'm an 'oh well' son when it comes to missed calls, texts and holidays. Oh well."

Others tried to comfort the young woman by sharing stories of their own toxic parents, with one user explaining the moment she knew she had to cut ties with her mum.

She said: "I cut contact with my mum and I'm sure she has no idea why.

"One of the biggest reasons was she had enthusiastically agreed to adopt my cat when I was moving because she loved him so much.

"A couple months later he got sick and she didn’t want to put any money into figuring out what was going on by getting a second opinion from another vet.

"I was really upset with how she was handling it so took a day or so to collect my thoughts and before I reconnected with her she asked me where I got the cat as a baby.

"I was like why are you asking? She had already had him put down. And her way of telling me was to ask me where I got him so she could get another?

"She's insane and I feel so guilty for leaving my cat with her only for him to die a few months later. He was in perfect health when I had seen him last."
