Mum of three left without toilet for more than 24 hours told to empty kitchen sink

A mum and her three sons had no toilet for 24 hours after a plumber dismantled their broken one - leaving them with no proper loo.

Katie Parish, 23, from Salford, called a plumber to come and fix her faulty toilet.

The plumber came by on Wednesday night and had to dismantle the whole toilet.

The young family were then left without a toilet for more than 24 hours before another engineer couldn't come to fix it until Thursday evening.

But Katie claimed that the new plumber then arrived to the appointment with nothing but a plunger and had to be told that there was no toilet to fix, reports the Manchester Evening News

She says the plumber had no portaloo to offer the family and instead handed them a 'Kampa khazi' that had to be emptied manually.

She claimed that when she asked the plumber where they should empty the waste, the plumber suggested they empty it in the sink or outdoors.

ForHousing manage the property and have since apologised to Katie and her family for the 'problems they have been experiencing.'

They have installed a new drainage system in the toilet and began working on a new kitchen and bath for the family after the MEN contacted them.

"The toilet has always had problems since I moved here." Katie said earlier, as she awaited news of when her toilet would be fixed.

"There's always a problem with the drainage, it's always blocking and collapsing and they won't fix it.

"They've left us with a hole in our toilet and the smell coming from it is horrendous.

"I've got a four-year-old and he always says he wants his friends to come over, and I have to say no.

"This year will be the first year my family will be coming here for Christmas.

"I might have to cancel Christmas because who would want to use that?"

Katie moved into the home in Irlam four years ago and says the state of the house has been an ongoing issue that has never been resolved

She says that she and her three young boys have had to deal with mould, damp and leaks which have affected the children’s health and a kitchen in disrepair.

"I moved here four years ago and I've been [contacting] them about the kitchen because it's fallen apart." She explained.

"I got a new carpet not long ago, and there was a leak from the shower and it completely ruined the carpet.

"I've had to go out my own way to pay for flooring to be put down.

"They need to move us and rip the house apart and start again.

"If they offered me another property, it would have to be here.

"I've lived here all my life, my kids go to school here and I'm good friends with the neighbours."

Jake O'Sullivan, 21, is the father of Katie's children and her ex-partner, he has been helping out by paying for new flooring, ceilings and painting over the mould in the house.

"The smell is horrible , they might as well be homeless, it's cleaner out there than it is here," said Jake.

"It depresses you, having to live in a place like this.

"Katie is getting depressed over it and she doesn't know how to deal with it.

"She just wants to sort it out.

"The house has been like this since she moved in.

"I'm working part time and I've spent more than £3,000 on trying to fix this place.

"That's money spent on furniture, flooring and carpets that have been damaged by the damp and leaks.

"I've finished all my savings, on work that I shouldn't have to pay for."

Martyn Hague, Director of Neighbourhoods, ForHousing, said:

"We apologise to Katie and her family for the problems they have been experiencing.

"We have not met the high standards of service we aim to deliver in this case, and we’ll be looking into the matter to find out what has happened.

“We are working hard to ensure that the collapsed drain is fixed as soon as possible, and have spoken to the family to make sure we provide all the support they may need until the work is complete.”
