Mum fled from house after son threatened to stab her

A Bellshill woman fled from her home after her son threatened to stab her.

Sandra Ritchie returned to find her television had been smashed.

Her son James also damaged a door lock and broke glass in an internal door.

Ritchie, 22, a prisoner, appeared from custody via videolink at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

He admitted causing damage and threatening or abusive behaviour at his mum’s house in Hattonrigg Road.

The incident happened about 10.30pm on February 18 last year.

Neil Thomson, prosecuting, said the pair had been drinking heavily and an argument developed.

He explained: “Ritchie shouted and swore at his mother. This included a threat that she might end up being stabbed.

“He damaged the locking mechanism of the front door and smashed a panel in an internal door.

“At that stage his mother fled from the house.

“When she returned Ritchie was no longer there. She noticed the TV screen and surrounds had been damaged.”

Defence agent Ian Scott said Ritchie had been taking street valium at the time.

The solicitor added: “His behaviour does not show him in a good light, but he and his mother have mended fences.”

Sheriff Douglas Brown jailed Ritchie for five months, backdated to February 26 as he had been in custody since then.
