The project is a component of a statewide initiative to renovate public tennis courts across Great Britain, funded by the UK Government and the LTA Tennis Foundation and carried out by the LTA.

This initiative will revitalize thousands of existing park tennis courts that are currently in poor or unusable condition.

The renovated tennis courts are also expected to introduce improved court accessibility with new gate-access technology and booking systems.

The park venues being renovated are:

  • Chorlton Park
  • Cringle Park
  • David Lewis Recreation Ground (Boggart Hole)
  • Debdale Park

Councillor John Hacking, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for Skills, Employment and Leisure said:

"This partnership coincides with the news that Manchester will be welcoming the famous Davis Cup this September after winning a bid to host the competition earlier this year.

"It's great that Manchester City Council and the LTA are going to refurbish and upgrade tennis venues in and around the city. I hope that with the Davis Cup and refurbished tennis courts, local communities and residents of all ages are encouraged to get involved with tennis and enjoy being active."

Councillor Lee Ann Igbon, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for Vibrant Neighbourhoods said:

"These added sports facilities are great for our parks and the communities that frequently use them. The Council are working closely with the LTA to ensure that the refurbished courts are accessible for residents of all ages, regardless of their tennis proficiency.

"In addition to this, we hope that by investing in local sports facilities, residents will be encouraged to be active and look after both their mental and physical wellbeing."

The renovations are expected to start this month and finish in June.
