One detainee was killed and two more were critically injured after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas was “showered with bullets,” officials say.
Joshua Jahn, a 29-year-old Texan, was identified as the suspect in the sniper shooting. He “fired indiscriminately” at the building around 6:20 a.m. Wednesday, hitting a van in the sallyport where the detainees were inside, according to authorities.
No ICE agents were injured in the attack.
One unspent shell casing recovered from the scene had “ANTI ICE” written on it, FBI Director Kash Patel said on X. The exact motive of the shooting remains unclear.
Jahn was found dead on the roof of a nearby immigration attorney's office with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
Jahn’s family struggled to process the news. “I’m still trying to…” Noah Jahn told The Independent. “I'm back and forth with the police, I'm just…” He then hung up.
Noah didn’t believe his brother had “strong feelings about ICE,” he told NBC.
The Trump administration has blamed the “left” for the shooting, with President Donald Trump raging on Truth Social, “The continuing violence from Radical Left Terrorists, in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, must be stopped.”

Texas Democrat criticizes Republicans for making 'all of their comments' about law enforcement
02:40 , Rachel DobkinRepresentative Mark Veasey, a Texas Democrat, has criticized Republicans for making “all of their comments” in the wake of a shooting at an ICE center in Dallas Wednesday about law enforcement.
Veasey told CNN that Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson and Senator Ted Cruz of Texas said at the end of a news conference that no law enforcement officials had been injured in the shooting “when all of their comments had been about law enforcement.”
“ These are people too. The migrants are individuals, they're people. And the fact that their lives meant nothing to our governor, to our senator, to the mayor,” Veasey said. “And they were just glossed over for these talking points so they could make it sound as if this is some sort of partisan fight that Democrats and Republicans are having. I think it is sad and very reflective of the time that we live in, and we gotta do better.”
Three detainees were shot, one of whom died, when suspected gunman Joshua Jahn opened fire early Wednesday morning, according to authorities. Jahn died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Trump administration has pinned the violence on “left-wing extremism” as the FBI says “anti-ICE messaging” was found on shell casings at the scene.

Kristi Noem confronted on claims the "left" is to blame for Dallas shooting
02:30 , Rachel DobkinHomeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was confronted by CNN’s Kaitlan Collins Wednesday night about claims from the Trump administration that the "left" is to blame for the shooting at a Dallas ICE facility.
Despite little details about the shooting and no motive from the suspected shooter Joshua Jahn being released to the public, President Donald Trump said “the continuing violence from Radical Left Terrorists, in the aftermath of [conservative activist] Charlie Kirk’s assassination, must be stopped.”
Vice President JD Vance called the shooter “a violent left-wing extremist.”
When Collins asked if the assessments made by Trump and Vance were “based on information that the Department of Homeland Security provided to them,” Noem appeared to beat around the bush.
The secretary said the shooter “ is someone who is very much against our ICE officers and the work that they were doing and opposed to what they're doing, just opening up fire on an ICE processing facility, where they knew that law enforcement officers would be and individuals would be, gives us some indication as to how this individual felt.”
Noem added: “ I can't speak to what the president and vice president were briefed on, but people don't write ‘anti-ice’ on ammunition and then fire into a building that support the work that our law enforcement are doing.”

Attack is 'result of the Radical Left Democrats constantly demonizing' law enforcement, Trump says
Wednesday 24 September 2025 21:29 , Kelly RissmanPresident Donald Trump said he had been briefed on Wednesday’s fatal shooting in a post on Truth Social, placing blame on the “radical left democrats” for “demonizing” law enforcement officers:
It has now been revealed the deranged shooter wrote “Anti-ICE” on his shell casings. This is despicable! The Brave Men and Women of ICE are just trying to do their jobs, and remove the “WORST of the WORST” Criminals out of our Country, but they are facing an unprecedented increase in threats, violence, and attacks by Deranged Radical Leftists.
This violence is the result of the Radical Left Democrats constantly demonizing Law Enforcement, calling for ICE to be demolished, and comparing ICE Officers to “Nazis.” The continuing violence from Radical Left Terrorists, in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, must be stopped.
ICE Officers, and other Brave Members of Law Enforcement, are under grave threat. We have already declared ANTIFA a Terrorist Organization, and I will be signing an Executive Order this week to dismantle these Domestic Terrorism Networks. I AM CALLING ON ALL DEMOCRATS TO STOP THIS RHETORIC AGAINST ICE AND AMERICA’S LAW ENFORCEMENT, RIGHT NOW!
The Trump Administration is fully committed to backing Law Enforcement, Strong Borders, securing our Homeland, deporting Violent Illegal Criminals, and fully rooting out the Left Wing Domestic Terrorism that is terrorizing our Country. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
Vance says he's 'mourning and rooting for' Dallas ICE shooting victims
Wednesday 24 September 2025 21:17 , Andrew FeinbergAfter his remarks in Concord, North Carolina, Vice President JD Vance discussed the Dallas ICE facility shooting, offering prayers for the victims.
"We're all mourning and rooting for and praying for everybody who was injured at that ICE facility, and as far as we know, it looks like some of the detainees, in other words, some of the potential illegal aliens, were some of those who are affected,” the vice president said.
“Look, just because we don't support illegal aliens, we don't want them to be executed by violent assassins engaged in political violence."
Vance said generally that if your political rhetoric encourages violence against law enforcement then “you can go straight to hell.”
Democrats needed to stop saying that everyone who disagrees with them is a Nazi, he added. That is the way to stop political violence, he said.

Wednesday 24 September 2025 20:26 , Kelly RissmanDNC Chair Ken Martin denounced the attack at the Dallas ICE facility and said it takes “all of us” to quell “epidemic of violence” as some Republicans point fingers at Democrats in the wake of the shooting.
“Today, America experienced another horrific act of violence that killed two ICE detainees and injured another in Dallas, Texas,” Martin said in a statement, adding he was praying for the victims and labeling the incident as a “senseless and cowardly attack.”
“Let me be clear: It will take all of us — not just one side of the aisle or the other — to quell this epidemic of violence, which has no place in our democracy. Martin’s comments come after several Republicans and members of the Trump administration, including Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, pointed fingers at the left’s rhetoric in the wake of the shooting.

Vance blames 'violent left-wing extremist' for Dallas attack as probe into incident is ongoing
Wednesday 24 September 2025 20:14 , Kelly RissmanVice President JD Vance blames a “violent left-wing extremist” for the Dallas ICE facility attack that left two detainees dead and one critically injured as the investigation into the incident continues.
“I said Charlie Kirk’s assassination was the most political and disgusting violence that we’ve had in this country in the last couple of weeks. And that was true maybe until this morning,” the vice president said, referring to the Dallas shooting.
Vance made the remarks while speaking about the Trump administration's efforts on public safety, support for law enforcement, and tax policy in Concord, North Carolina on Wednesday.
The facility was “opened fire upon by a violent left-wing extremist, a person who wrote ‘anti-ICE’ messaging on their bullets, and there’s some evidence that we have that’s not yet public, but we know this person was politically motivated,” Vance continued.
The shooter was "politically motivated" to go after law enforcement, he said, calling it “the most disgusting thing.”
Officials have not yet publicly named the suspect. Kash Patel, the FBI director, posted a photo on social media of unspent shell casings recovered from the scene, including one that was scrawled the phrase “ANTI ICE.”
The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, authorities have said.
Officials have not publicly named the suspected shooter, although media outlets have identified him as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn.

What we know about suspected shooter Joshua Jahn
Wednesday 24 September 2025 19:30 , Kelly RissmanJoshua Jahn, 29, has been identified by multiple outlets as the shooter involved in Dallas ICE facility shooting.
The shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Two ICE detainees were killed and another detainee is hospitalized in critical condition.
The shooter “fired indiscriminately” into the Dallas ICE building, including at a van carrying the detainees, the Department of Homeland Security has said.
FBI Director Kash Patel posted a photo of bullets recovered from the scene, including one scrawled with the phrase: “ANTI ICE.”
“He didn’t have strong feelings about ICE as far as I knew,” Noah Jahn, Joshua’s older brother, told NBC News before learning that his brother had been identified as the suspect.
“I didn’t think he was politically interested,” the brother added. “He wasn’t interested in politics on either side as far as I knew.”
He and Joshua grew up in Texas; their parents had a rifle and Joshua would’ve known how to use it, he told the outlet.
“He’s not a marksman, that’s for sure,” Noah said. “He would not be able to make any shots like that.”
Shooting comes amid standoff between California Governor Newsom and DHS
Wednesday 24 September 2025 19:15 , Kelly RissmanWednesday’s shooting at the Dallas ICE facility transpired days after the Department of Homeland Security said it will refuse to comply with a new California law that bans ICE agents from hiding their faces during immigration raids.
California Governor Gavin Newsom gave his assent to a bill forbidding local or federal law enforcement agents to wear ski masks, neck gaiters, or other face coverings while on official business on Saturday.
Wearing masks is rare in the history of American law enforcement, but has become routine under the Trump administration as agents reportedly racing to fulfill stringent arrest quotas round up thousands of immigrants without criminal records.

Trump administration calls on Democrats to 'stop demonizing' immigration officials after shooting
Wednesday 24 September 2025 17:50 , Kelly RissmanTrump administration officials have blamed the left for its rhetoric about immigration officials in the wake of the shooting at the Dallas ICE facility.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the shooting should serve as a “wake-up call to the far-left.”
“For months, we’ve been warning politicians and the media to tone down their rhetoric about ICE law enforcement before someone was killed. These horrendous killings must serve as a wake-up call to the far-left that their rhetoric about ICE has consequences,” she wrote in a post on X.
“Comparing ICE Day-in and day-out to the Nazi Gestapo, the Secret Police, and slave patrols has consequences. The men and women of ICE are fathers and mothers, sons and daughters,” Noem continued. “The violence and dehumanization of these men and women who are simply enforcing the law must stop.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt similarly urged Democrats to quit “demonizing” immigration officials in the wake of the shooting at the Dallas ICE facility.
“Democrats must stop demonizing the heroic men and women of ICE who are just doing their jobs to keep Americans safe,” she wrote on X on Wednesday.

Her post comes after FBI officials announced that a shell casing engraved with “ANTI-ICE” was recovered from the scene.
The suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. Little other information about the suspect is publicly known at this time.
Leavitt used the same phrase as Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz, who at a press conference on Wednesday demanded all lawmakers to stop ‘demonizing’ agents.
“To every politician who is demonizing ICE, who is demonizing CBP: stop,” Cruz said.
"In America, we disagree," he added. "That's fine, that's the democratic process, but your political opponents are not Nazis."
Another 'act of targeted violence' against a Texas ICE facility occurred just two months ago
Wednesday 24 September 2025 17:30 , Kelly RissmanAn FBI official noted Wednesday’s attack in Dallas marks “just the most recent example of targeted violence” against an ICE facility in Texas, referring to the July 4 attack against a nearby immigration center.
On July 4, a group of attackers dressed in black military-style clothing opened fire outside the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, southwest of Dallas, Texas, authorities have said.
Fourteen people have been since charged in connection to the attack.
