Multiple dead after fire breaks out in Cambodian casino hotel on Thai border

A fire at a Cambodian casino hotel on the border with Thailand has reportedly left multiple people dead.

At least 10 people were killed in the blaze at the Grand Diamond Casino and Hotel in the border town of Poipet.

It broke out at around midnight on Wednesday and was still burning on Thursday morning, the website Cambodianess, which belongs to the Thmey Thmey media group, said.

It cited Banteay Meanchey provincial Police Commissioner Major General Sithi Loh saying that according to initial information, at least 10 people had died and another 30 were injured.

Approximately 400 people were in the building when it caught fire, police said.

Keat Hol, the mayor of Poipet, said in a statement: "As of now, the fire continues to burn quickly and the extent of the damage has not yet been estimated."

Authorities have yet to confirm what caused the fire.
