Multi-million pound debts of collapsed Welsh cheese company

The collapse of a Welsh cheese maker has left a multi-million pound debt trail.

GRH Food Company in Minffordd, Gwynedd, told its 86 strong workforce that the company was going into administration in June, with KPMG brought in.

The workers were made redundant and the business stopped operations at its £6.5m headquarters.

A report into its affairs has now been released.

It shows that around £4m is owed to unsecured creditors, which includes more than 130 businesses, workers and the HMRC.

Welsh Government is also among those seeking money back after a £1.7m grant to support the relocation to the new HQ back in 2017.

There is a total of £317,260 expected to be available for unsecured creditors - leaving a deficit of around £3.7m.

The company does have assets - including property, machinery as well as book debts owed to them.

But these are subject to fixed charges from HSBC Invoice Finance and HSBC Equipment Finance.

Paul Dumbell, joint administrator, said: “GRH was an ambitious business that had grown in recent years, but the squeeze of increased costs and liabilities put too much pressure on its finances."

A Welsh Government spokesman said: “The Welsh Government is seeking full recovery of all funds owed by GRH Food Company Limited, and we continue to exhaust every avenue in the pursuit of the debts owed to us.”
