Although it can be tempting to bin yellow stained pillows and replace them with new ones, a particular hack could help freshen up your pillow without needing to throw it out - with just a simple household item. The Express reports that this tip will only cost 4p, a fraction of the cost of completely replacing old bedding.
Katherine Tefler took to Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips on Facebook to ask for some advice. She said: “How do you get yellow stained pillows white again?”
Cleaning fans flocked to the comment section to offer their best advice, with many suggesting that it is better to avoid harsh chemicals and instead use a dishwasher tablet. Frankie Christine said: "Use a dishwasher tablet in your washing machine. I swear by this."
Eileen Wyatt also agreed writing: "I done my other half's grubby pillows yesterday, 40 wash with a dishwasher tablet. Like brand new now." And a third, Lisa Coleman said: "Dishwasher tablets are an essential when washing any of my whites. It’ll whiten your yellowed pillows instantly.
Angie Richards commented: "Using a dishwasher tablet works for me. Brings them back to white." And Deb Roy added: "Absolutely a dishwasher tablet in the drum. Game changer, you need to try it."
Marie Jones replied: “I used a dishwasher tablet, put it in the drum with the pillow and the rest of my white wash, amazing. I have always used soda crystals in my white wash, just wanted to give dishwasher tablets a try, either are amazing."
People with dishwashers probably already have some tablets around the house ready to use. But for those who don't, there are plenty of very cheap options available in local supermarkets.
Asda are currently selling a 30 pack of dishwasher tablets for £1.34, working out at just 4p per wash cycle. Sainsbury's sell them for £3 and Tesco sell a 40 pack for £4.
Baking soda was also a popular choice to help remove the yellow stains. Beth Kirkwood wrote: "I think baking soda would be good to use on yellowed pillows as it works great on laundry."
Tatiana Moffat suggested: "Try bicarbonate of soda. Add it to the washing machine and hang outside to dry." And Ailleen Coleburn added: "Add the pillow to the wash with your normal detergent then add a cup of baking soda. I use it for all my whites."
