Mrs Hinch fans praise £1 spray as 'game changer' for banishing grime build-up in washing machine

If you've noticed that your clothes aren't smelling as fresh as usual when they come out of the washing machine, a build-up of dirt in a hidden spot could be to blame.

You'd be forgiven for thinking you shouldn't have to clean a machine whose job it is to clean other things - but like anything else in your home, your washing machine will likely become grimy over time. The seal around the door can be particularly susceptible to a build-up of sludge - and it can also prove stubborn to remove.

One desperate mum reached out to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips page on Facebook to ask for help on the issue, along with a picture showing her washing machine seal covered in unsightly black spots. Luckily, fans of the cleaning pro were quick to offer helpful tried-and-tested advice - with several people suggesting the same product to do the trick, The Mirror reports.

The mum wrote: "Help. I've neglected our washing machine since becoming a mum and now it has a build-up of black on the seal that I can't seem to wipe off. Any suggestions, please? Thank you."

One of the most common recommendation in the comments section was Astonish Mould and Mildew Spray, which can be bought for as little as £1 from Poundshop, and is also going for £1.19 in Asda or £1.20 from Iceland. The spray comes in an apple burst scent to get rid of any unpleasant damp smells - you just need to spray, leave for a few minutes and then rise or wipe clean.

Several people said they had used the spray themselves to get their washing machine sparkling again. One Mrs Hinch fan wrote: "Astonish Mould and Mildew spray. If you use this you'll find that the mould wipes straight off."

"This stuff is really good," someone else agreed. "Recently I used it in the detergent drawer and where the water comes out. It's a game changer for removing black build-up."

And another helpful Facebook user added: "Astonish Mould and Mildew. Spray it on and leave it for a few minutes and it'll all come off."
