‘Mrs Hinch effect’ strikes again as Wilko reveals Instagram-worthy greys as its most popular paints

Wilko is celebrating 90 years on the high street and to mark the occasion, has taken a closer look at sales of one of its most popular product ranges - paint.

The home and garden retailer found that the ‘Mrs Hinch’ effect has struck again, with shoppers going grey crazy thanks to the cleaning influencer’s Instagram feed, which is packed with shots of the muted shades she uses to decorate her home.

While shades of grey take the top-spots, along with another recent hit, millennial pink, many Brits are opting for more adventurous colours including bright citrus yellow and even festive red tones.

Wilko analysed sales of its paint range from the last 20 years to track how trends have developed over time.

Interestingly, the early noughties and Brits’ love of makeover TV shows such as Changing Rooms meant that magnolia and cream were the most popular shades at the start of the century, while flashes of bold colour and a proliferation of grey are the top trending tones today, thanks to social media celebrities.

The popularity of interiors Instagrammers is heavily influential when it comes to how we style our homes and the popularity of grey paint could be the latest example of the Mrs Hinch-effect, which has previously seen sales of items including cleaning products skyrocket.

Wilko launched in 1930 as a hardware store in Leicester and first started selling pots of paint in 1973 as one of its original own-brand products.
