Mr G: ‘This is the real sound of house music’

The track I’ll be opening my next DJ set with
Mr G: If House Is A Nation

It’s my call to arms. I get so many requests to release it but in an age where everything seems to be out there, it’s quite nice not to. If you wanna hear it come and check me somewhere live soon – you’ll get its full force!

The track that currently gets the most rewinds
Black Jazz Consortium ft Lady Blaktronika: Your Love

This is the real sound of house music: full of soul, depth, emotion and raw as hell! When I drop this in a mix, that’s the time to beg a rewind from the top!

The track I wish I’d signed to my label
North Lake: Marlborol Noir

The amount of skill, soul and general off-the-hookness is crazy! It never fails me in whichever setting I’m playing it. A real gem – if only more people knew how special it was.

The track I’d play to show off my eclectic tastes
Velvet Season & The Hearts Of Gold: Love Generation

Psychedelic synth madness with super-cool drums – it just gets me and if you stick with it the track will get you, too. It’s intense, so really only for those with an open mind. I wish there was more like this challenging piece.

The track that got me out of bed this morning
We Have Band: Honeytrap

Believe it or not, it was the music behind the new Coca-Cola advert. It’s been stuck in my head. Now most mornings I get up humming it. It has a wicked electronic groove as if it has a chest all pushed out.

The track I’d play at my auntie’s wedding
Matumbi: After Tonight

British lovers rock at its finest and perfect for proper push-me pull-you dancing, which is want you want at a good wedding. It reminds me of my local disco in St Augustine’s church hall – waiting for my time to pounce!

The track that should have been a crossover hit
Felix Da Housecat: Runaway Dreamer

It really is a masterful piece of work and it will always be a big hit in my life. It was just released at a time when minds were less open. It would sound great on the radio now, though.

The track I’d play at my funeral
Quincy Jones: Tell Me A Bedtime Story

It’s saved me from myself many a time, when I’ve ended up with dark thoughts or in the wrong place. It never ceases to amaze me, from the arrangement, emotional strings, keyboard player, the backing vocals. So much euphoria… I know for sure people will be bawling!

Mr G plays The Hydra at Studio Spaces, E1, Saturday 3 October
