MP: Barwani, Dhar waste maximum Covid-19 vaccines in Indore division

INDORE: Barwani and Dhar districts in Madhya Pradesh have reported the highest Covid-19 vaccine wastage rate in Indore division, records of the regional director (health services) office show.

Barwani reported 1.93% wastage rate in case of Covaxin and Dhar had wasted 1.91% Covishield vaccines till now.

The wastage rate of both districts in other Covid-19 vaccine candidates are negative including -2.23 for Barwani and -0.69% in Dhar.

Regional director (health services) Indore division Dr Ashok Dagaria said, “The high Covid-19 vaccine wastage rate in two districts are because of large size of vials and mobile team walking to remotest areas to inoculate remaining population.”

In case of Barwani, the large vial size of Covaxin along with less availability of population for vaccines are the cause behind high wastage rate.

Similarly, is the case for Dhar district, said Dr Dagaria.

Barwani district had already covered over 90% of its adult population with the first dose of vaccine and 82% with second dose with most of them being covishield, showed record.

“Because of more inoculation of covishield, the eligible population for covexin remain on the lower side and the dose is required to be administered within the four hours of opening up of vials," said Dr Dagaria.

Further in the case of Dhar, the district achieved 105% of targeted first dose coverage in the adult population and 85% with second dose of Covid-19 vaccines, said Dagaria.

“Most of the remaining population for the second dose in the district is in the rural part of the district on terrain, in tribal areas. The mobile teams are moving to these areas to inoculate the people,” said Dr Dagaria.

“Because of this, the high wastage rate of covishield is reported in the district,” added Dr Dagaria. TOI on December 25 reported that 27 rural blocks in Indore division including seven in Dhar district lagged in Covid-19 vaccine coverage.

The record further suggested that the other districts had shown negative wastage rate because of over extraction of dosage except Khargone, Indore and Khargone, which had reported 0.18, 0.43, 0.75% wastage in Covaxin.
