MP accuses Jeremy Clarkson of 'incel-like' behaviour after vile column and demands change

Jeremy Clarkson's "incel-like" behaviour has been slammed by an MP after his vile column about Meghan Markle.

SNP MP Hannah Bardell, who is Member of Parliament for Livingston, was one of 60 MPs who wrote a letter demanding an "unreserved apology" is issued to Meghan "immediately" for language that has "no place in our country". Ms Bardell appeared on Good Morning Britain today where she spoke to Adil Ray and Charlotte Hawkins about his comments.

Jeremy Clarkson sparked furore when he penned a column in The Sun about the Duchess of Sussex and said he wanted her to be 'paraded naked through the streets' and 'dreams of people throwing lumps of excrement at her'.

The article became the most complained about in history, with the IPSO (Independent Press Standards Organisation) receiving more than 17,500 complaints. The number of complaints surpassed the total number the regulator received last year, which was 14,355.

"Oh dear. I’ve rather put my foot in it. In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people. I’m horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future," he wrote on Twitter after the backlash began but there was furore as they slammed his "pathetic apology".

During an appearance on Good Morning Britain today, Ms Bardell slammed Jeremy's behaviour and said it should have never been published, as she explained why she joined the cross party group calling for Meghan Markle to be apologised to.

She said: "It's a fairly unique thing for so many MPs from all parties to come together like this. For someone to even think that, let alone write that, nevermind it get through both a legal and editorial team. It's remarkable and really sad.

"He said he hated Meghan on a cellular level, it's almost incel-like behaviour. It frankly makes women in public lives more difficult and dangerous to exist in a public space ... Certainly it's not the kind of culture we want to see."

The MPs sent a letter to the editor of The Sun, with the Chairwoman of the Women and Equalities Select Committee Caroline Nokes saying: "We are horrified at the recent article by Jeremy Clarkson in your publication ...

"We cannot allow this type of behaviour to go unchecked any longer ... This sort of language has no place in our country, and it is unacceptable that it was allowed to be published in a mainstream newspaper. Ms Markle has faced multiple credible threats to her life, requiring the intervention of The Metropolitan Police. Hateful articles like the one written by Mr Clarkson do not exist in a vacuum, and directly contribute to this unacceptable climate of hatred and violence."

The article was removed from The Sun's website on Monday afternoon at Clarkson's request.
