Mount Isa salons weigh up FIFO stylists amid spike in demand

Bron Myers' hairdressing salon is almost booked out for the remainder of the year.

A Mount Isa business owner struggling to find qualified staff to work in her hairdressing salon is considering taking her recruitment drive to the tarmac.

The mining town is home to 16 studios, but locals are waiting weeks for appointments because many of the businesses have only one or two qualified hairdressers.

Bron Myers said she was having trouble finding staff prepared to move to the region.

"At the moment, we are nearly booked for 2020," Ms Myers said.

"So we're not taking any more colour clients at the moment, because we're looking after the clients we have."

Ms Myers said she had considered looking for a fly-in, fly-out stylist.

"That's pretty much how crazy it has gotten," she said.

New salon gets support

Jo Knell recently opened a salon after her mine job was made redundant.

She said she had to be flexible with her opening hours to make sure clients, many of whom were shift workers, could get appointments.

"I'm doing a lot of after hours [and] Sunday trading to help out loads of people," she said.

She said opening her business in the middle of the pandemic required a lot of faith, but she knew the demand was there.

"So far so good," she said.

"I've been very blessed. I've had so much community support."
