Motorists stop 'erratic' driver on Edinburgh City Bypass more than six times over drink-drive limit

Edinburgh motorists banded together to stop an "erratic" driver on the City Bypass yesterday evening.

Officers say the man, who had no lights on, was stopped at Sheriffhall last night (7 December) by concerned motorists.

Police arrived at the scene and the 30-year-old driver had a breath alcohol reading more than six times the legal limit.

Road Police Scotland said that the driver had recorded a breath reading of 148mcg per 100ml of breath, which is well above the 22mcg limit in Scotland.

The police division said: "Tonight a driver was stopped by concerned motorists at Sheriffhall after witnessing the vehicle being driven erratically with no lights on.

"Dalkeith Road Police attended and driver failed the roadside breath test, providing a lower reading of 148 (limit 22) at the station. #CourtOnMonday"

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "A 30-year-old man will be appearing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday."

Officers have been out in force as Police Scotland's Drive Smart campaign kicks into gear.

The campaign aims to discourage drink driving by pulling drivers over and breath testing them.

One driver in Dalkeith was caught after failing a roadside breath test just half an hour after the campaign began.
