Motorcyclist seriously injured in collision on M66

A motorbike rider was seriously injured in a collision on the M66.

The smash, involving a car and a motorbike, took place between junction three for Hollins and junction four for Simister Island.

An air ambulance was called to the scene and paramedics treated the injured man at the scene.

He was then taken to a major trauma centre hospital for further treatment.

It is understood the motorcyclist, aged in his mid 30s, has suffered an injury to his leg.

A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 9.52am. We have attended with the air ambulance, a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance.

"It is a man in his mid 30s, he has got a leg injury."

Drivers were warned of congestion building in the area.

A tweet from Highways England said: "M66 from J3 (Pilsworth Heywood) towards J4 (Simister Island) currently has one lane closed due to a collision.

"Recovery are en-route. Traffic Officers @NWAmbulance & @gmptraffic @NWmwaypolice are on scene.

"Congestion building on the approach."
