Motorcyclist banned after being caught more than twice the drink-drive limit

A motorcyclist has been banned from the roads after he was found over the drink-drive limit.

Trevor Cranston was riding a Honda CBR when it crashed in the Lemington area of Newcastle on May 4.

Emergency services arrived at the scene and he was taken to hospital with a leg and head injury.

However, it was found he was more than twice the drink-drive limit. He had 215mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood - the legal limit is 80mg.

The 44-year-old, of Kenilworth Road, Newcastle , appeared at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court and pleaded guilty to a charge of driving with alcohol level above limit.

Prosecutor Laura Lax said police received a report of a collision at around 5.30am and arrived on Lemington Road, near the junction of Riversdale Way, where they found the Honda motorcycle.

The rider was being seen by paramedics for head and leg injuries. A roadside breath test was then carried out and it showed he was over the limit.

When he was taken to hospital, a further test gave the 215mg reading.

Cranston's solicitor Peter Docherty urged magistrates to deal with the offence with a financial penalty.

He added: "This is his first offence and he's unlikely to do it again."

Cranston, who has no previous convictions, was disqualified from driving for two years and was offered a drink-driving rehabilitation course. If he completes the course, the length of his driving ban could be reduced.

He was also handed a £618 fine, with £85 court costs and a £62 victim surcharge.
