Motorcyclist airlifted to hospital after Cheddar Gorge crash

The main road running through Cheddar Gorge has been closed by police following a crash.

A motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital after the collision, which happened along the B3135 Cliff Road today (Friday, July 31).

The road winds through the popular Somerset beauty spot and is where some of the visitor parking is located.

Avon and Somerset Police said the crash happened at about 1.40pm, and the road remained shut this evening.

The force took to Facebook advising motorists to avoid the area, but did not state if the motorcyclist was seriously injured or if any other vehicles were involved.

Several people in the area said they had seen the air ambulance overhead.

Bristol Live has contacted emergency services for further information.

Cheddar Reservoir and the car park were closed today, on the hottest day of the year so far, due to safety concerns.

Bristol Water took the decision to close the attraction for the day as a result of the weather, in anticipation of an influx of people swimming, drinking, littering and gathering at the lake.

The water provider explained in a Facebook post this week: "Unauthorised swimming is never safe in reservoirs.

"There will be extra signage and barriers up at the lake, and the car park will be locked with security on site.

"We know this will be disappointing for anyone hoping to visit on Friday, but we hope you understand why, and we’ll be back open as normal again on Saturday (August 1)."

Cheddar Gorge and Caves had planned to reopen on Monday (July 27), but announced a few days before that the reopening date had been postponed "due to unforeseen circumstances."

Cliff Road stretches for about three miles from Cufic Lane to Plummer's Lane, and there was still traffic in the area as of 8pm this evening.
