MotoGP Catalan GP red-flagged twice after scary multi-bike melee

The Catalan Grand Prix was red-flagged on lap 12 of 24 after a sudden mechanical issue for race leader Pedro Acosta triggered a major, multi-bike incident.

Acosta was leading the Barcelona race when he suddenly slowed down with a mechanical issue heading into Turn 10. The Spaniard raised his hand to signal the rest of the field, but second-placed Alex Marquez had no time react and clattered into the back of the KTM.

The impact sent Marquez off into the gravel and his bike disintegrated after barrel rolling over the grass.

Trackhouse rider Raul Fernandez, who was running third, was also involved in the incident, while Fabio di Giannantonio crashed going into Turn 10 after slipping on debris.

Marquez was reported conscious but the medical team is yet to provide a full update on his condition, with an ambulance arriving at the scene.

All other riders were able to return to the pits, with di Giannantonio also able to bring his hobbled bike back to the garage.

After a delay of half an hour, the race was restarted for 13 laps, with positions determined based on standings on lap 11.

However, not long before the action got underway, the race was stopped yet again following a crash involving Johann Zarco, Luca Marini and Francesco Bagnaia at Turn 1.

All three riders were reported conscious, with medical crew attending Zarco, who got tangled up in his LCR Honda.

The pitlane is due to reopen at 15:12 local time, with the race shortened to 11 laps.
